UWSC Column: 2015 Return on Investment

The United Way of Story County (UWSC) 2015 Live United campaign has concluded, and the generosity of Story County has resulted in another record-breaking total - $2,118,612! We truly thank you for impacting the education, income and health of individuals and families in our community! The countywide goal of $2.1 million was exceeded, but more importantly, you helped change the lives of your friends, colleagues and neighbors.

The campaign is a great start, but did you know the value of your contribution is even greater? We decided to once again estimate the return on your investment when you donate to the Live United campaign. For every dollar you contribute to UWSC through the annual campaign, you actually receive a $1.64 return on your investment. For a graphical breakdown, please contact our office. But we’ll try to explain it in text …

Current year support, which includes the Live United campaign, Endowment donations and Golf Fore Kids fundraising resulted in the $2,118,612 number. Some UWSC program partners used their allocations to leverage additional revenue through state, federal or foundation grants, resulting in $839,475. And United Way’s Women with Initiative program received a grant to expand programming, which added another $57,481 for this year. Another $344,396 can be added through collaborations and special projects such as Grade-Level Reading initiatives and the summer programs in Ames and Nevada. Finally, $119,928 has been saved to UWSC and partner agencies because UWSC mobilized volunteers for the Day of Caring, summer programs, Women with Initiative mentoring and more.

Add all those figures together, and the 2015 total impact adds up to $3,479,892. Do a little math with that number and the campaign number using a percentage change formula, and it results in a $1.64 return on investment for every $1 donated. As a donor myself, I feel really good about that return!

We couldn’t make the impact we do without supportive businesses, partner agencies providing much needed services and a very generous community. Thanks again for all you do for Story County! Let’s continue to follow our passion and give, advocate and volunteer to make positive change. Because great things happen when we live united.
