Food Insecurity

United Way of Story County is on a mission.  Part of that mission is that Story County residents have access to enough food, and healthy food at that. In order to get there, United Way collaborates with our partner agencies offering food security programs, community organizations, and other key stakeholders.

Strategy 1: Reduce the Meal Gap

United Way tracks the number of meals served monthly through UWSC partner agency programs and services, as well as those connected to mainstream benefits such as WIC and SNAP. Funding is also provided for a K-5th Backpack Program, distributing sacks of food for children in need over the weekends.

Strategy 2: Improve Access to and/or an Ability to Prepare Nutritious Food

United Way tracks those individuals who participate in health food access/nutrition programs and the number of healthy meals provided through UWSC partner programs and services. Surveys are also conducted to gather results on individuals increasing their healthy eating due to participations in a UWSC partner program or service.

Strategy 3: Provide Emergency Services

United Way also funds emergency services programs supplying emergency food via food pantries, adult/family shelter food programs, and Healthy Food Vouchers.
