Out of School Learning

Learning loss happens when students are not in school, especially from June to August.

This can affect them all year long. The United Way of Story County works with different organizations to help students through community and school programs. These programs come together to support our youth and give them a better chance to reach their academic goals.

Story Country Summer Camps & Programs

United Way of Story County and our educational collaboration, Story County Reads, believe that every child should have the opportunity to attend summer camp. Summer programs are a great way of promoting social interaction and well-being. Plus, they enhance school-year learning.

Check out the Summer Camp Fair Guide for more details on programs throughout the county!

We are happy to share this list of local summer camps that offer financial assistance. The majority of these organizations participated in the 2025 Summer Camp Fair; a few are partners or collaborators that could not attend but offer free/low-cost programs. Note: this information comes from organization websites and/or leaders.

SUMMER LEARNING

Research from the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the National Campaign for Grade Level Reading shows that students who aren’t involved in school or enrichment activities during the summer fall behind in their education. On average, students from low-income families lose two months or more in reading skills. Many of these students already face challenges during the school year that put them behind. Without learning opportunities in the summer, this gap can grow even larger. By the end of 5th grade, these children, who need extra support, are often nearly three grades behind their more advantaged peers in reading.

Knowing this, United Way of Story County is proud to fund and support partners that provide food and educational opportunities for children during the summer.

OUT OF SCHOOL LEARNING

The National Summer Learning Association found that teachers usually spend about two weeks going over last year’s material to help students catch up before starting new lessons. Even during the school year, there isn’t always enough time to cover everything. Our partners are here to help support students and offer extra learning opportunities for kids in all seven school districts in Story County.
