Women with Initiative Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Drivers

If you are interested in driving women in Ames or surrounding communities, we need you! Before transporting any participants, you will need to contact your insurance provider and confirm your coverage applies to this situation. United Way of Story County is unable to extend our coverage to volunteer drivers. We have found that most insurances policies apply, but if you have any problems or your insurance agent needs more information, please contact us.

Childcare Providers

We want to provide women with a safe place for their children to stay while they attend the financial training workshops. The childcare will take place on site, so we will have all of the supplies you need to have a fun evening with these little ones. We will adhere to the state's guidelines on ratios of providers to children, but it is not necessary for you to have state licensure to volunteer. For more information, please contact Angela at United Way of Story County.

Workshop Volunteers

We have many supplies that need to be dropped off at the workshop site. This includes workbooks, sign-in sheets, pens/pencils, and meals for the participants and their children. If you are available, we would love to have you help. You are also welcome to stay at the workshop and observe the session. The extra supplies will be returned to the United Way of Story County office following the workshop.

Financial Mentors

One-to-one mentoring relationships help participants transition their workshop information to their real-life situation. In order to be most effective, our mentors attend a comprehensive training session. Acting as a financial mentor to women in Story County can be a powerful way to give back to your community. Typical topics covered by mentor and participant pairs are budgeting, saving strategies, and understanding credit. Women with Initiative is focused on creating lasting change. Help by serving as a mentor!
