Endowment FAQ
How can I donate to the Endowment?
What is an endowment?
An endowment is a fund that is held permanently by an organization giving it greater long-term financial security. It provides a dependable source of income each year to be spent on strategic programs and needs, as allowed by the organizations spending policies. It also allows wiser program planning and guards against untimely budget reductions in difficult economic times. Just as annual gifts are vitally important to provide for todays needs, gifts to an endowment are crucial for the future. These gifts are invested, and a portion of the annual investment return is available to be spent each year. The remaining income is returned to the principal to continue generating investment income.
Why does United Way of Story County need an endowment? Isn't the annual campaign enough?
The United Way of Story County annual campaign will always be critical in accomplishing UWSCs vision of improving the quality of life in Story County. However, reliance solely on annual gifts is a risky and unwise practice for any organization. Endowment income will expand UWSCs ability to quickly address and meet community needs despite any fluctuations in the economy. It will build a safer, stronger and healthier community for the future.
How can I utilize my estate plan to give to the UWSC Endowment?
There are many tools to use in estate planning. The simplest is a bequest in a donors will, and others are securities, life insurance, retirement income gift annuities and remainder trusts. Donors can contact UWSC for more information, and should also contact their financial professionals to discuss the options that are best in their individual situations.

What is a Charitable Gift Annuity?
A Charitable Gift Annuity is a planned gift that provides an income for life to the donor, while designating a gift to a charitable organization. In return, the donor also realizes an annual return on the gift and a sizable tax benefit. Donors who are interested in a Charitable Gift Annuity should contact UWSC as well as their financial professionals.
